More about us

The Poor's Land (Woolpit)

The Charity is also known locally as ‘Woolpit PL Trust’ and ‘Woolpit Charity Lands’.

The Trust was set up in 1895 to relieve poverty in the parish of Woolpit by providing help to those in need because of youth, old age, ill-health, disability or financial hardship.

In recent years, the Trust has supported the Woolpit Primary School, the Woolpit Arc and the Luncheon Club. It has also given grants to students and gift vouchers at Christmas to elderly Woolpit residents.

The purpose of this website is to highlight plans to bring the charity up to date following discussions with The Charity Commissioners.

As part of those plans a consultation meeting took place on Friday 3rd November 2023 at the Village Institute with all Woolpit residents invited to attend. Questionnaires were also circulated to residents seeking views on how the Trust might operate in the coming years.

The results of these exercises will now be considered by the trustees over the coming months as part of their planning for 2024 and beyond.

A copy of the consultation document is still available on this website for reference. Any questions or enquiries can be directed via email to: enquiries@woolpittrust.co.uk

Charity’s Purposes

The Trustees of the Charity have successfully applied to the Charity Commission for an amendment to the charity’s purposes to permit the Charity to use its funds in ways more relevant to current conditions.

Accordingly, under Section 280A of the Charities Act 2011 the following Charitable Purposes were adopted following receipt of approval by The Charity Commission:

The Trustees shall apply the income of the Charity for the public benefit to the prevention or relief of poverty, the advancement of education insofar as consistent with the relief of poverty, the advancement of health or the saving of lives, or the relief of those in need because of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage, in each case for the benefit of persons resident in the Parish and in such ways as the Trustees think fit, including providing grants and items to individuals, charities and other organisations benefitting residents in the Parish.
